I am going to send this photograph that I've had for thirty years or so to Robert De Niro.  I will include my return address. I wonder if he will thank me?

feeling benevolent ...  I saw four or five spectacularly handsome twenty something black men on the street as I walked along on this dappled afternoon afternoon. It's something about the color and the sheen and smoothness and symmetry ... a fecund beautiful thing.  walking in the sun, it felt like college days in Ohio.  so much freedom. full. to talk and walk and read and listen and see and laugh. and maybe learn.  except for the fact that I hardly had any sex, it was heaven on earth.

I have been trying to eat better lately and succeed more than fail. vegetables, beans, oatmeal, fruits, like that.   I had a half an everything bagel just now.   Like lobster thermidor, crepe suzette, slide off bone ribs. Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you’ve got till it's gone?  Try it with Audrey Hepburn movies, like Charade ,   and be enthralled all over again by her everything.

Listening to Paul Simons latest …. Seven Psalms … his final years musings, all about lyrics, acoustic guitar tap tap tap … unfinished easy, weak, tired vocals … duh he’s 81. wish it was better, wish we were younger and both cooking with boundless fuel … now is the time to miss the time … oh, Paul … t he lord is my engineer, a face in the atmosphere, a virgin forest, a welcomed something to a stranger …  where be the bullseye suns of yesteryear?

Michael

This is the only art I have hanging in my living room. It was left to me by my best city friend, Michael, who died in 1990. A few years later, I produced a series of short tv spots called Keepsakes. People remembered a loved one who died of AIDS without mentioning the term. One of my guests cancelled at the last minute and I asked Mary in our art department if she’d like to do one. She hesitated and then agreed.   Mary relayed an amazing story about Michael. He borrowed a bottle of gold leaf from her right before he died. A short while later, she needed it for a freelance job and remembered she had given it to Michael. The next day she entered her loft and in the middle of the floor there it was. Her gold leaf.

In our younger days we did that

He seems to have had that most dubious and enchanting of gifts, the ability to romanticize reality, for oneself and others, as it is happening.

In 1941,  American doctor William Bennett Bean began a 35-year study of his own fingernail growth, concluding that climate, season and geographical location have no effect on growth rate.
