Mon 10/31 I am reading The Dutch House by Ann Patchett.  A review of the book noted the relationship between the two main characters, a brother and sister, was unrealistic because there was never ever even a shred of animosity between them.  It's possible. T here has never been a minute of malice between me and my four sisters.   Unfortunately, I cannot claim the same about my brother and me.  As Katharine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitane says in The Lion in Winter Well, what family doesn’t have its ups and downs ?

Sun 10/30 On Halloween Eve, young children in Des Moines, Iowa celebrate Beggars' Night. The event began around 1938 as a way to prevent vandalism and give younger children a safer way to enjoy Halloween. Kids are required to tell a joke, poem or perform a trick for a treat.  I'm ready. If April showers bring May flowers, what do May flowers bring?” Pilgrims

Sat 10/29        Beautiful sparkling afternoon. Sparrows bathe and fight over real estate in a fountain in  the pocket park next to the library. Whenever I park my butt here and read the paper,  Joni’s “California”  comes to mind. Sitting in a park in Paris, France Reading the news and it sure looks bad They won't give peace a chance That was just a dream some of us had Still a lot of lands to see But I wouldn't wanna stay here It's too old and cold  and settled in its ways here Oh, but California California, I'm coming home I'm gonna see the folks I dig I'll even kiss a Sunset pig California, I'm coming home I met a redneck on a Grecian isle Who did the goat dance very well He gave me back my smile But he kept my camera to sell Oh, the rogue, the red, red rogue He cooked good omelets and stews And I might have stayed on with him   But my heart cried out for you   California Oh, California, I'm coming home Oh, make me feel good rock 'n r...

Words of love

Fri 10/28 I came upon this pin recently. My good friend Noni gave it to me years ago. She was awarded it when we took a typing class  in high school. We told our teacher, Sister Frances de Chantal, that we were going to get married and live over Liggetts Drugstore. She asked us what were we going to live on and I answered “love.” She made this tiny Cheshire Cat grin that we had never seen before.

Thurs 10/27 Third day of horrible head cold... nothing to read, watching 1972 Black Mama, White Mama at two thirty in the morning - it's so bad it's amazing ... Pam Grier, shot in Manila, a heavy lesbian slant - prisoners, heat, hill bandits, escapee whores in chains and nun drag and all the revolutionary soldiers look exactly the same - skinny with nasty staches.  The poly shirts are off the charts. oh, was a time.

Sun 11/23 Went to see the Hopper show at the Whitney and wow, he really captured sensuous light and loneliness.   One of my favorite paintings of his is New York Movie 1939.   There’s something hallowed about a theater, faces and thoughts and feelings displayed on a screen for people to take in and keep with them forever.   And then, still, there - a troubled woman can be lost in her thoughts and maybe the world. It’s a work of aching beauty.

Fri 10/22 My friend who invited me to the worst theater I ever saw a few weeks ago invited me to go see a modern day radio play of MacBeth tonight. I’m not sure what happened at the box office, there seemed to be some confusion, but the two of us walked into the theater, sat down and realized the program we were reading wasn’t the play we thought we were about to see. We were at the wrong place and watched the wrong play. This is a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury and signifying nothing.
